Butterflies of the Caribbean | Salvador Gonzales | 2000

Fishtown/Kensington #LovePhilly

I was just a girl from a small town before Philadelphia taught me to embrace possibility. My playground for four years, the neighborhoods surrounding La Salle University shattered my naive assumptions and expanded my worldview beyond the limited scope of my privileged upbringing.

When my community development class visited the Village of the Arts and Norris Square Park, I gazed in awe as the murals, open spaces, and unbridled hope interrupted the urban landscape. That day I tasted Puerto Rican food for the first time and marveled at the beauty of Salvador Gonzales’s “Butterflies of the Caribbean,” only beginning to understand the transformative and healing effects of these community empowerment programs.
